What is obesity?
Obesity is a medical condition characterized by an excess in body fat that increases your risk of chronic health issues. But the good news is, obesity can be reversed.
If your weight is greater than what is considered healthy for your height, you may be considered overweight or obese. Ms. Ware and her team at Alpha Health & Wellness, DPC, use the body mass index (BMI) as a screening tool to assess weight status.
The BMI is a number calculated based on your height and weight, and your number indicates:
- Less than 18.5: underweight
- 18.5 to less than 25: normal weight
- 25 to 30: overweight
- Greater than 30: obese
- If your BMI is 40 or higher, you’re considered severely obese.
Your BMI doesn’t directly measure your body fat, but the number is a good indicator of excess fat and the associated health risk factors.
What are the health risks of obesity?
Obesity isn’t just about how you look. Carrying excess weight and fat also increases your risk of developing chronic health conditions. Some of the most common health issues related to obesity include:
- Cardiovascular disease
- High blood pressure
- Joint pain
- Breathing disorders
- Erectile dysfunction and gynecological issues
- Carrying excess weight also affects your quality of life and may affect your mental health.
